Unix Disk Usage Help

The CSM AC&N cluster is used by nearly all members of the Mines community for email and general Unix work.  If the disk that holds user folders and files gets too full it will cause serious problems for all users.  To prevent these problems, AC&N has assigned each user a disk quota or maximum amount of space that they are allowed to use; the current quota is 400 MB.  No more than 50 MB of this space should be used for email stored in a users inbox storage folder.  If you have a valid academic reason that requires additional storage, please let AC&N know by filling out a Mines Help Center request (http://helpdesk.mines.edu.)  Be aware that, if you make such a request, AC&N system administrators will be checking on what files you have, when they were created, etc.  Note that the following are not considered "valid academic" needs:

  • Backing up files from your PC.  Please fill out a Mines Help Center request for assistance with this task.

  • Storing music, video or images not related to CSM's Academic Mission.

If a user has exceeded an individual quota, they may encounter problems like:

  • Repeatedly seeing the same message or messages, marked as unseen.

  • Unable to save, or receive new email messages.

  • Unable to save drafts in CSM Webmail, PINE, or IMAP sessions.

  • Unable to transfer, edit or save files in your home directory.

Login to the Mines Quota site to check disk usage against quotas and determine free space (https://hagrid.mines.edu/csm-cgi-bin/passwd.cgi?FORM=QREP&HOST=imagine.mines.edu).

If you are unable to find or delete large files or folders that affect quota, please open a ticket at the Mines Help Center and we will find out what is taking up the space.
