Scanning Images to a Homepage

Please Note: You must have a homepage on the CSM Web page in order to use these instructions.

First, you should scan your image with:

• Microsoft Photo Editor (easiest to use)
• Adobe Photoshop
• HP Deskscan

If you have a problem with scanning, see the Computing Center guides for scanning or check with the staff member on consultant at the Computing Center Front Desk.

Then, save the scanned image as a *.gif or *.jpg to c:\scratch.

Next, FTP the saved image file to Slate:

• Run WS-FTP
• Enter "slate" in the Host Name field
• Uncheck "Anonymous Login"
• Enter your username in the UserID field
• Enter your password for Slate in the Password field
• Click "OK"

The window on the right is your home directory on Slate and the window on the left is for the hard drive of the scanning computer.

Do the following steps:

• Change directories on Slate to your homepage directory using the "ChgDir" button on the right side
• Enter your homepage directory (student homepages are at: /csminfo_students/first_letter_ of_ your_ username/your_username)
• Click "OK"
• Change directories on the scanning computer to the scratch drive, click the "ChgDir" button on the left side
• Enter c:\scratch, then click "OK"
• Click the file name for your picture on the left window
• Then click the arrow pointing to the right located between the windows
• Repeat this step for each of the pictures you would like to put on your homepage
• When finished, click "Exit."

To change the permissions on the file:

• Telnet to Slate
• Go to your homepage directory
• Change the permissions for your pictures to allow them to be read and executed by everyone who accesses your homepage by typing: chmod a+rx filename
