Pine Email Quick Reference
Pine is a registered trademark of the University of Washington; UW Computing and Communications Group created and maintains the Pine email system and User Guide. (http://www.washington.edu/pine/user-guide/)
The on-screen menus and messages on Pine make it relatively simple to use. The following are basic instructions for using Pine for your email. A more comprehensive users guide is published by UW at the link above.
To use Pine to manage or view email:
Log on to Imagine and, at the imagine prompt (imagine#>), type pine.
The Main Menu screen for Pine will appear; to choose an action, type the letter which precedes the menu choices in the index list which is shown below. You do not need to press Return after typing the character.

"Help" on each screen will provide you with help information for the function you are currently using. To exit Help, type E.
To use the commands at the bottom of the screen, hold down the Control key at the same time you are pressing the appropriate letter key. EXAMPLE: Control + Y will take you to the top of the previous screen.
The arrow keys will move you through the commands.
"Compose Message" allows you to prepare a message to be delivered through email:
To compose the message, fill in the information in the TO: field and press Return (Enter) to go to each of the remaining fields.
If you wish to send the message to more than one person, type commas between the email addresses in either TO: or CC:. Once you have completed the information in the MESSAGE TEXT field, type Control + X and then press Return to send the message.
Control + C will cancel the message.
To read your incoming email, select Folder Index (I) from the MAIN MENU. Use the arrow keys to highlight the message you wish to view and press Return to view a message.
Type N to see the next message.
Type I to return to the index of messages.
To reply to the current message, type R. You will be asked whether you wish to include the text of the original message in your reply.
To return to the MAIN MENU, type M.
The Folder List command (L) takes you to the Inbox folder that stores your incoming messages until you have an opportunity to view them.
The Saved-Messages folder holds copies of saved email. If you wish to save a message from your Inbox you can store it in the Saved-Messages folder or specify another folder. You may save a message either by highlighting it on the Inbox screen or while you have it open to view. Type S (save). You will receive the following message: SAVE to folder [saved messages]:. To use the default folder [saved messages], press Return. To specify a different folder, type the folder name and press Return. Once the message has been saved, the original in the Inbox folder is automatically marked for deletion. When you quit Pine, you will be asked whether you want to clear the original message in the Inbox folder; you should do so in order to conserve disk space.
The Sent-Mail folder automatically stories copies of the email messages you compose and send. These folders should be routinely cleaned out so that they will not occupy excessive disk space.
To open a folder, use the arrow key to highlight the folder name. To see an index of the messages in that folder press Return.
To quickly go to the index of another folder type G (Goto Fldr) followed by the folder name.
To forward a message, either select the message on the Index screen by highlighting it or view the message and then type F. A copy of the message opens and the TO: field is highlighted. Enter the address of your recipient and send the message as usual.
Deleting a message is a two-step process: first it is marked for deletion and then expunged. You may either highlight the message on the folder index screen, or view the message and then type D to delete it. If you are viewing the Folder Index screen when you type D, a D appears in the left-hand column of the message line. If you are viewing the actual message text, a DEL will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and the text of the next message will appear. If you change your mind about deleting a message before you have expunged it, use the U (undelete) command to remove the deletion mark. Once you have marked all of the messages you wish to delete, go to the Folder Index screen and type X (expunge). You will be asked: "Expunge '#' message(s) from 'folder'?" Type Y (yes) or press Return and the messages will be expunged.
To quit Pine, type Q (quit).
