Blackboard Software Features
Blackboard is a software package which aids faculty in the development and delivery of on-line course material. It gives faculty the ability to create and maintain a web site for their courses without dealing with the details of HTML, scripts or web programming. The web sites created by Blackboard can be simple, consisting of online syllabus and course announcements, or they can be dynamic and complex, including online exams written by the instructor and an online grade book which allows students to check their grades at any point during the semester.
A Blackboard course site consists of the any or all of the following features.
- Course Information - Static information such as the syllabus, contact information for the faculty member and/or teaching assistant. This information can be entered via web based forms (in which case Blackboard formats the information) or the instructor can upload existing files that the student can read or print.
- Announcements - Announcements throughout the semester. These announcements are displayed on the students home page when he or she logs into the Blackboard system.
- Assignments - Instructors can include traditional homework assignments by uploading existing documents. The instructor can also make entries in the course calendar, which is linked to each students personal calendar.
- Surveys or Exams - Simple tools provided as part of the Blackboard system are used to create online exams or surveys (surveys are ungraded exams). Questions can be true/false, multiple choice, short answers, matching or essay. For all types except essay the software grades the question. Exams can be built with a fixed list of questions, or the software can randomly select questions from a question bank.
- Communication - Blackboard provides a number of communication options, including: Sending email to all or a selected group of students, a discussion board where students can post questions, and Digital Drop Box which provides students and the instructor a mechanism for exchanging files.
- Gradebook - A spreadsheet like gradebook is available. Students can view their grades at any time, and instructors can export the gradebook to an external spreadsheet.
- Virtual Classroom - Instructors can interact with students in real time using an electronic white board and a chat feature.
